REPLICA OF THE DESICCATED HEAD AND PARTIAL SPINE OF PUBLIUS QUINCTILUS VARUS
The desiccated, partially burnt and brutalized head and partial spine of Publius Quintilius Varus _ Spiked and displayed by the Cherusci tribe following the battle of Teutoburg Forest, Germania.
The disaster that shook Rome in 9 AD, where 15,000 - 20,000 Roman soldiers were killed.
An alliance of Germanic tribes ambushed and destroyed three Roman legions and their auxiliaries over a period of just two days. On the second day the Germanic tribesmen overwhelmed the Romans and began a mass slaughter. With his army disintegrating, Varus committed suicide by stabbing himself with his gladius, rather than be captured.
This is a depiction of Varus severed, partially burnt, brutalized and spiked head which would have been displayed by the Cherusci . It is presented here on a wooden stand with metal plaque.
Made mainly from Wood and Polystirene.
