Jan (Johann Theodorus) Toorop was born in Purworedjo on Java.
Toorop studied drawing at the Polytechnical School in Delft (1876-1879). Subsequently, he studied at the national academy of fine arts in Amsterdam (1880-1882) and at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Brussels (1882-1885). He also devoted himself to sculpture and craftwork. In the Netherlands, he became the leader of the Jugendstil movement. Because of the number of irregularly curved lines, people at the time referred to this movement as the ‘salad oil’ style. This name refers to a well-known advertising poster that Jan Toorop made for "the Delft salad oil". Jan Toorop was not only a painter, draughtsman, etcher and lithographer, but also designed tile panels, stained-glass windows and stamps.
In 1905 he converted to Catholicism, after which he almost exclusively painted religious subjects and portraits in a slightly more geometrical style. In turn he also knew how to inspire other artists.
For example, Toorop was a great source of inspiration to Gustav Klimt.
